How the Treatment Works
It’s all about light frequencies. Light is made up of photons, and when observed as waves, an individual photon waves in a specific frequency. These frequencies can be mixed and matched. Sunlight, for example, is a mix of quite a few frequencies. A laser, on the other hand, emits monochromatic light, or in other words, a single wavelength and frequency.
An IPL device is calibrated to emit a carefully chosen mix of wavelengths. This mix results in an intense energy burst that penetrates right through the epidermal layer without damaging it. Instead, the energy is absorbed deeper down in the dermis, and this is where most subsurface areas of hyperpigmentation exist. This is also where capillaries lie, and it’s also where most of the collagen in the skin is produced.
When these tissues absorb the light energy, they heat up and are slightly damaged. The body responds by creating replacement tissue at a rapid pace. Some of this replacement tissue will eventually move upward and become the new epidermal layer, and it will be smoother and more youthful-appearing than the tissue it replaced.
